In 2021, the price of electricity in Spain reached historic levels due to several factors, such as the increase in the cost of natural gas, and the rise in the price of CO₂ emission rights in the European market. These increases directly affected the final price of electricity, reflected in a sharp increase in the bills of consumers, especially households and small businesses.
The Spanish tariff system, which is based on daily auctions, meant that the highest price, determined by the most expensive technology, affected all users, regardless of the energy source used.
This situation generated great social unrest and highlighted the shortcomings of the current energy model, which does not favor the use of cheaper renewable energies, such as solar and wind power.
